Indication: Dental health (children)

Source: Eur Arch Paediatr Dent, August 2011;12(4):211-5.

Research: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of probiotics on salivary mutans streptococci counts of children and to explore their anti-caries potential. The researchers recruited 150 healthy children aged 7-14 years who were randomly divided into three groups: Group A: placebo powder; Group B: freeze-dried powder combined with Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Bifidobacterium species; and Group C: freeze-dried powdered preparation of Bacillus coagulans.

Results: After 14 days of probiotic ingestion, a statistically significant reduction was found in salivary mutans streptococci in both groups B and C, which researchers believe may help to prevent dental caries in children.
